March 8 – 10; 20 – 22
This ski tour is a big and challenging, multi-day ski mountaineering objective. The tour weaves its way around and through some of the most awesome and severely glaciated terrain in the lower 48 states. The tour has a majestic feel of remoteness that you will never forget. With three technical cols to cross, four large glaciers to ski down and a possible summit ski off of Eldorado Peak, this ski tour will be a high point of your life. It is greatly important that everyone on this tour can climb over 4,000 feet of elevation several days in a row.
Itinerary
Day 1: Ski up to Boston Basin and set Camp between 4,000 & 5,500 feet. This is the most strenuous day and it is the only day that consists entirely of climbing. Depend
ing on how the day goes we may ascend Shark’s Fin Col on this day and descend onto the giant Boston Glacier.
Day 2: If the visibility is good, we break camp and make the committing ascent to Shark’s fin Col. A rappel down the other side then puts us on the massive and very remo
te Boston Glacier. From here, we get to ski our first 500 foot run. We cross the Col on the North Ridge of Forbidden peak and get wide open glacier skiing under the North Face of Forbidden peak down 3,500 feet to the awe-inspiring Moraine Lake. After a well deserved break we then climb 3,500 feet up to Klawatti Col. From here, there are several different options, depending on the time and energy level at this point in the day. There may be enough time to get 500 feet of skiing in and set up camp near Austera peak or to continue on toward Eldorado and set up camp nearby for the final day.
Day 3: This day may present the opportunity to ski from the top of Eldorado peak, and, will certainly involve downhill skiing, bringing us down the opposite side of Eldorado and then down Roush Creek.
